Non- Flashcards
Entamoeba coli
Non-pathogenic amoeba, larger than E. histolytica, found in the colon, with sluggish non-directional motility.
E. coli vs. E. histolytica
E. coli has blunt pseudopodia, sluggish movement, eccentric karyosome, no RBC ingestion, and 8 nuclei in mature cysts.
Entamoeba gingivalis
Found in the mouth, common in gum disease (pyorrhea), no cyst stage, transmitted via kissing, droplets, or utensils.
Naegleria fowleri
Free-living pathogenic amoeba causing primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Enters through the nasal cavity into the brain.
Acanthamoeba spp.
Causes granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAM) and keratitis. Enters through mucosa, eyes, or wounds.
Naegleria vs. Acanthamoeba
Naegleria has 3 stages (amoeboid, flagellated, cyst), only trophozoites in the brain, while Acanthamoeba has 2 stages (amoeboid, cyst), both found in the brain.
Diagnosis of Naegleria
CSF examination.
Diagnosis of Acanthamoeba
Brain biopsy or corneal scrape; CSF examination may be negative.
Treatment of Naegleria
Amphotericin B (not very effective).
Treatment of Acanthamoeba
Miconazole (not very effective), keratoplasty in severe cases.
Habitat of Naegleria
Primarily the brain.
Habitat of Acanthamoeba
CNS, eye, and other tissues.
