Nomenclature: Terms Flashcards
Erosion caused by scratching, usually linear
Excoriations
-special lesion
Firm edematous plaque resulting from infiltration of the dermis with fluid.
Wheal
-primary lesion
collection of leukocytes and free fluid
Pustule
-primary lesion
Abnormal formation of connective tissue implying dermal damage
Scar
-secondary lesion
(if growth of scar tissue expands beyond the borders of the original primary lesion then it is called a keloid)
Linear loss of epidermis and dermis with sharply defined, nearly vertical walls.
Fissure
-secondary lesion
circumscribed elevated solid lesion more than 0.5cm
Nodule
-primary lesion
Small superficial keratin cyst with no opening
Milia
-special lesion
lesion with a “bulls eye” appearance (3 colors)
Target Lesion
-special lesion
circumscribed flat discoloration of any color
Macule
-primary lesion
elevated solid lesion more than 0.5cm
Plaque
-primary lesion
circumscribed lesion with a walled off lumen that may contain fluid or solid matter
Cyst
-primary lesion
collection of dried serum and cellular debris
Crust (scab)
-secondary lesion
narrow, tortuous channel produced by a parasite
Burrow
-special lesion
plug of sebaceous and keratinous material lodged in the opening of a hair follicle
Comedo (comedones: plural)
-special lesion
focal loss of epidermis and dermis, heals with scarring
Ulcer
-secondary lesion
elevated solid lesion smaller than 0.5cm
Papule
-primary lesion
circumscribed flat discoloration greater than 3-4cm
Patch
-primary lesion
dilated superficial blood vessels
Telangiectasia
-special lesion
circumscribed deposit of blood less than 0.5cm
Petechiae
-special lesion
focal loss of epidermis, no scarring because it doesn’t penetrate below the dermoepidermal junction
Erosion
-secondary lesion
area of thickening epidermis due to scratching often associated with hyperpigmentation
Lichenification
-special lesion
circumscribed collection of free fluid up to 0.5cm in diameter
Vesicle
-primary lesion
circumscribed collection of free fluid larger than 0.5cm in diameter
Bulla
-primary lesion
