nomenclature Flashcards
Abrasion
non carious, mechanical wearing of tooth from interaction with objects other than tooth-tooth contact
Apex
terminal end of root of the tooth
alveolus
cavity or socket of jaw in which root of tooth embedded
alveolectomy/alveoloplasty
Surgical excision of a portion of the dentoalveolar process, for recontouring of the alveolar ridge at the time of tooth removal
anodontia
congenital absence of teeth, not due to extraction or impaction
alveolar osteitis
inflammation of alveolar bone most commonly occurs as postoperative complication of tooth extraction
apicoectomy
A root end surgery, root resection, retrograde root canal treatment or root end filling
apexification
closure of root apex by hard tissue diposition
attrition
wearing away of tooth by friction or rubbing leading to physiological loss of tooth structure
bite biopsy
sampling sub-epithelial leisons using large capacity forceps
core needle biopsy
done with larger needle and small incision made in skin above the area to be biopsed, gives more information than fine needle aspiration
excisional biopsy
Biopsy in which entire lesion is removed
incisional biopsy
a sample of tissue is cut from a mass (incised) and removed
punch biopsy
biopsy taken as punch size piece of leison
surface biopsy
detaching cells from a cutaneous or mucosal surface with a spatula, cotton swab, or brush
bite registration
taking an impression of a patient’s upper and lower teeth in the bite position
bridge
fixed dental prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth
ball therapy
Used to correct mild dental occlusion if detected in early stage
buccotomy
removal of selected tooth
Bullous pemphigoid
uncommon skin condition characterized by presence of fluid or pus filled blisters
Caries
progressive destruction of the bone or tooth, decay or cavity in tooth
crossbite
A malocclusion in which a mandibular tooth or teeth have a more buccal or labial position than the antagonist maxillary tooth
calcinosis circumscripta
deposition of calcium in bony prominences or in footpad or mouth
cleft lip
congenital defect when puppy lips don’t form properly
cleft palate
abnormal opening on the roof of the mouth, common birth defect in puppies
soft palate hypoplasia
malformation of soft palate
calvarial hyperostosis
rare, non-neoplastic, proliferative bone disease characterized by swelling of skull
chewing leison
A proliferative, verrucous lesion along the bite-plane of the cheek or sublingual region
craniomandibular osteopathy
non-neoplastic proliferative bony disease of dog affecting mandible, tympanic bullae and occasional other of head
commissurotomy
surgical incision of commissure to access the caudal oral cavity
condylectomy
removing the condyle allowing new fibrous tissue to form for better range of motion
