Nomenclature Flashcards
1
Q
Naming Steps
A
- Identify longest carbon chain containing teh highest-order functional group
- number teh chain
- name substituents
- assigne number to each substituent
- complete the name
- Alphabetize
2
Q
Alcohols
A
- -e to -ol
- OH gets the lowest possible number
- Geminal diols: same carbon
- Vicinal diols: adjacent carbons
3
Q
Aldehydes
A
- -e to -al
- Chain terminating
4
Q
Ketones
A
- -ane to -one
- Give carbonyl lowest possible number if it is the highest-priority group
- When not highest priority group, use oxo- or keto- as prefixes
5
Q
Carboxylic Acids
A
- Terminal functional groups
- Highest priority group
- -e to -oic acid
6
Q
Esters
A
- Carboxylic acid derivative
- -oic acid to -oate
7
Q
Amides
A
- suffix becomes -amide
- Substituents attached to nitrogen atoms are labeled with a capital N-
8
Q
Anhydrides
A
- Replace acid with anyhydride
- formed from 2 COOH’s; one water is removed
9
Q
Functional group priority
A
- Correlated with oxidation state; highest oxidation state, highest priority
Carboxylic acid > Anhydride > Ester > Amide > Aldehyde > Ketone > Alcohol > Alkene > Alkyne > Alkane
