Nomenclature Flashcards
Characteristics of Anions
- Nonmetals form anions
- Named as root of elemental name, ending in -ide
- Charge based on periodic table
How do you name ionic compounds?
Write the cations, then the anions
Characteristics of Cations?
- Metals form cations
- Named as elemental name
- Charge based off periodic table
Which metals cannot form multiple cations?
Groups 1, 2, 11, 12, 13
With metals that can form multiple cations, what must be done after the name in the formula?
Write the charge number in parenthesis
Which rows are anions that end in -ate
2nd row - 3O’s
3rd row - 4O’s
Characteristics of Hydrates
Compounds with water molecules trapped in their crystals
Name ionic compound first, then a prefix for the number of waters, followed by -hydrate
Prefix for number of ions
1- mono 6- hexa 2- di 7- hepta 3- tri 8- octa 4- tetra 9- nona 5- penta 10- deca
What to do with covalent compounds?
Name the 1st nonmetal as element name, using prefix if more than 1 atom
Name the 2nd nonmetal with –ide, always use a prefix
Rules to naming acids
Arrhenius Acid – A compound that loses hydrogen ions in solution Arrhenius Base – A compound that loses hydroxide ions in solution Anion in acid ends in –ide hydro–root–ic acid Anion in acid ends in –ate root–ic acid Anion in acid ends in –ite root–ous acid
