Nomenclature Flashcards

1
Q

Procedure for naming Carboxylic Acids

A

1) Find longest continuous carbon chain containing the carboxylic acid group.
2) The carboxyl counts are a carbon atom
3) The carboxylate carbon atom is always number 1
4) -oic/ic acid at the end

Q

Procedure for naming Amides

A

1) The name of an amide is derived from the acid by replacing the ‘-oic acid‘ or ‘-ic acid‘ ending with “amide”, or replacing the -carboxylic acid ending with carboxamide

OR

2) The suffix amide is appended to the name of the hydrocarbon corresponding to the carbon chain that includes the carbonyl group
