16
Q

Hydrate

A

its a compound, often ionic, that contains one or more water molecules bound within its crystals in a fixed (stoichiometric) proportion

17
Q

anhydrous

A

Hydrates may typically be dehydrated by heating to remove the bound water molecules, yielding the anhydous compound

18
Q

to name hydrates

A
  1. name the anhydrous compound (per usual rules)
  2. add the word hydrate with a greek prefix denoting the number of water molecules
19
Q

Examples

CuSO4 -5H2O

CaCI-H2O

A

copper (||) sulfate pentahydrate

calcium chloride monohydrate

20
Q

Naming Binary Molecular Compounds

A
  • the name of the more matallic element (the one farther to the left and/or bottom of the periodic table) is named first
  • followed by the name of the more nonmetallic element (the one farther to the right and/or top) with its ending changed to the suffix -ide
21
Q

Naming binary molecular compound exceptions

A
  • when only one atom of the first element is present, the prefix mono- is usually not used
  • hydrogen binary compounds do not use any prefixes
  • when two vowel are adjacent, the a in the greek prefix is usually dropped
22
Q

SO2

N2O4

P4O10

A

sulfur dioxide

dnitrogen tetraoxide

tetraphosphorus

23
Q

Naming Binary Acids

A
  1. the word hydrogen is changed to the prefix hydro-
  2. the other nonmetallic element name is moditfied by replacing -ide with -ic, and the words from and 2 are combined into a single word
  3. the word acid is added as a word.
24
Q

HF (g) vs HF(aq)

H2S(g) H2S(aq)

A

hydrogen floride vs hydrofloric acid

hydrgen sulfid hydro sulferic acid

25
Q

Naming Oxyacids

A
  1. omit hydrogen
  2. start with the root name of the action
  3. replace -ate with -ic, or -ite with -ous
  4. add acid
26
Q

oxyacids

A

typical oyacids consist of hydrogen combined with a polyatomic, oxygen-containing ion

27
Q

HNO3

A

anion name: nitrate

acid name: nitric acid

28
Q

HNO2

A

anion name: nitrite

acid name: nitrous acid
