How do you write the nomenclature for molecular compounds
Name of 1st element w/ appropriate prefix except for mono then the base name of 2nd element plus “ide” with appropriate prefix
How do you write the nomenclature for ionic compounds
If compound contains a metal from g1,g2 or sc ag zn al ga it always had the same oxidation state. All other metals must be indicated by Roman numeral
Name of metal goes 1st followed by Roman numeral if necessary
Follow with base name of nonmetal plus “ide” or the name of the polyatomic
How do you determine the oxidation state of a cation that is not from group 1 or 2 (or al ag sc zn ga)
Number of e- in anion multiplied by how many of the anion are present
Divide by number of cations to get the number of e- which must be present in each cation
This is the oxidation #
Ex- Ti(CN)3= titanium (III) cyanide
CN-1⃣ (3) = 3
Ti=1
3/1=3
