Noble gases Flashcards
What property do all noble gases have
They are inert
Why are noble gases unreactive?
The outer electron shells are full, so they are stable and don’t need to react
What does being inert cause noble gases to exist as?
Single atoms - monatomic
Why is helium used in air ships and blimps?
It is unreactive and won’t explode
Why is helium used in deep sea divers’ breathing apparatus?
It is mixed with oxygen as it is unreactive. Oxygen is toxic to the human body under water
What are the uses of neon?
To make lights
In breathing apparatus for deep sea divers
Why is neon used to make lights?
When an electric current is passed through it, it glows orange
Why is argon used in fluorescent tubes?
Blue glow when current passed through it
Why is argon used in light bulbs?
To coat the metal filament and prevent it from reacting with oxygen. It is unreactive
What is a use of krypton ?
It is safe to use in the lasers doctors use when operating on eyes
What is one use of xenon?
In car headlights.
Why is radon used for radiotherapy?
It is radioactive
