No Sugar Flashcards
In Act One, scene five, Jimmy is sentenced to ‘three months hard labour’ in Fremantle Goal as a result of Frank Brown supplying alcohol to him. While in court, Jimmy attempts to explain his side of the story but is constantly interrupted by the JP saying “shut up you bloody idiot or I’ll charge you with contempt of court”.

The stage directions of ‘Neville and Neal exit in the other direction’
Are another cruel example of the lack of care shown.
Jimmy
This was the case for Billy, who originated from the ‘Kimberley’s’ and after the massacre of his ‘mob’, become devoted to the white people of the Moore River Settlement.
Billy
Billy returns to Mr Neal saying “He bin knock me silly fella, with a big stone”.
Billy
Billy remains loyal to Neal, constantly calling him “boss”
And accepting that he is superior due to his skin colour.
Billy
Neal abuses and belittles Billy, calling him a “bloody incompetent savage”.
Billy
They were doing it out of their own interests in order to have their own “nice little fuckin white town”.
This is shown when they unjustifiably move the Munday-Millimurra family from Northam to the Moore River native Settlement. Not only did they lie about the reason for their moving
Neville/Neal
Neville believes that if he can ‘provide the basic accoutrements of civilisation’
Then he will be able to civilise the Indigenous.
Neville/Neal
He displays his horror at seeing ‘so many dirty little noses’ and believes he is helping to civilise the Aboriginal children by ‘tak[ing] the liberty to order the materials’ to construct ‘handkerchiefs’ for them.
