NMR spectroscopy Flashcards
What are the 2 things that H nucleus can do while in magnetic field
Align with the external applied field
OR
Align against the external applied field
How does NMR spec work
At a specific applied magnetic field strength, energy (radio waves frequencies) is required to “Flip” a 1H nucleus from one “spin state” into the other.
The higher the magnetic field the higher energy is required.
What are the 2 different types of NMR machines
Fixed radiofrequency of 400MHz or a 600MHz which provide the same results
Is NMR quantitative or qualitative
NMR is usually run on pure compounds for qualitative analysis but since the size of the peaks in 1H NMR are proportional to the number of protons giving rise to the signal, it can also be used to determine quantitatively
What solvents is used for proton NMR
CDCL3
What equation is used to calculate the concentration of sample placed into the NMR
Standard integral / number of proton signals
