What problems did Nixon face from the beginning?
Nixons presidency was overshadowed by the Watergate Scandal. Other problems included inflation, Vietnam, a congress in with both chambers were controlled by the opposition, a greatly divided society and a youth rebellion
What factors limited Nixons social policy?
- He was more interested in Vietnam
- Congress was controlled by democrats
- He was too conservative and wanted to appeal to ‘middle America’
What did Nixon achieve for families?

attempted to replace the Great Society with a grant of $1600 to poorer families
What did Nixon achieve in terms of civil rights?
He had little interest in civil rights - however, by 1971, there were 13 black congressmen and 81 black mayors
Describe the Watergate Scandal
In 1972, Nixon was concerned that he wouldn’t be reelected, so set up CREEP - Commission to Reelect the President
He set aside $350,000 for ‘dirty tricks’
In June, 5 members were arrested for breaking into the democratic Watergate Offices to plant bugging devices
