What are indications for using N2O/O2 sedation?
A
- managing fear/anxiety
- medically compromised pt
- managing gagging

Why is nitrous so quick to start and stop anesthetic affects?
A
It’s just barely soluble, making it travel in blood but easily leave the blood as well

What are advantages of nitrous?
A
- rapid onset
- 3-5 min peak clinical effect
- depth of sedation
- duration of action
- short recovery
- ability to titrate
- few side effects

Does nitrous cross the placenta in a pregnant patient?
A
Yes, and produces CNS depression in fetus (do in 2nd trimester)

What are contraindications for nitrous?
A
- compulsive personality
- claustrophobic pt
- behavior problems
- severe personality disorders
- RTI
- COPD

What causes the hangover effect (diffusion hypoxia)?
A
CO2 is expelled faster than normal, making N2O rush into lungs and lowering O2
