NIS Chapter 01 Flashcards
Give the OSI model as well as the services that run there
-
which sections of the ISO model make up network protocols?
Session, transport, network
how do WLAN work compared to Ethernet?
instead of using wires, they send radio frequency through the air
What list of components are wireless devices equipped with in order to communicate wirelessly? And state the function of each component
- NIC (interface between the device and the network)
- Antennae( used to transmit or receiver the signals )
- Transceiver(modulation and demodulation. Translation)
- Circuitry
What tech helps a device translate analogue radio signals to digital pulses?
circutry
What are the 2 sublayers of the data link area?
- Logical link control
- media access control
what are the LLC and MAC’s functions?
LLC: an interface that allows the network layer to work wit any type of MAC
MAC: controls access to the physical layers ability to transmit data
What are the types of LLC?
- connectionless which does not resend packets
- connection full: keeps track of packets and resends them
What is the main task of the MAC?
to manage access to the shared medium through wire/wired transmission to avoid the interference of signals
What are the 2 key components of the WLAN?
- An access point
- a wireless card
What is BSS?
type of network topology that allows nodes in wireless network to communicate through a common medium. The AP
What is the BSSID
a unique identifier for a BSS, which identifies the AP using the mac address
what is SSID?
Identifies a particular wireless network
3 compositions of a network?
- station (802.11 device)
- AP (interface between stations)
- distribution system ( connection APs in 2 modes)
What are the 2 modes of a distribution system in a network
- adhoc
-infrastructure
What is the adhoc arrangement?
- communication on peer -peer basis
- Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS)
> elects a node as the proxy for coordination because there is none cause of peer peer
What is the infrastructure arrangement?
- more complex
- has atleast on AP or base station
- Extend service set
- more sync cause the AP are there and provide bridge to the wired network
Types of scanning?
Passive and active
What is the diff between active and passive scanning
Passive: waiting for a beacon ffrom an AP
Active: can either be a direct or broadcast probe and waits for a response
