What is the function and location of Cones in the eyes?
They are used to detect color, detail, and far away objects
They are located in the center of the retina in the back of the eye
What is the function and location of Rods in the eyes?
They are used for seeing objects in the corner of the eyes.
Also used for night vision.
Located in the back of the eye on the sides.
What is the average time for Cones and Rods to adjust to the dark?
Cones: 5-10 minutes
Rods: Around 30 minutes
What are examples of night illusions related to ground lighting conditions?
Distant stationary lights can be mistaken for stars and other objects
Black-hole approach when landing over water
Difficulty judging distance upon landing
Define: Somatogravic Illusion
Illusion of being in a steep nose-up climb after takeoff at night.
Define: Featureless Terrain Illusion
Absence of ground features. You think you’re higher than you actually are, which might lead to a lower than normal approach.
How can you maintain good eyesight?
Stay healthy
Vitamins
Don’t smoke/drink/do drugs
How can you improve effectiveness of vision at night?
Adapt to darkness 30 minutes before flying
Use supplemental oxygen above 5,000ft at night
Close one eye when exposed to bright lights
Blink eyes if they become blurred
Stay in good physical condition
What equipment should pilots have for night flying?
Red and white flashlight
Spare batteries
When are position lights required?
Sunset to sunrise
What is required on an aircraft when operated in a night operations area?
The aircraft must be:
- clearly illuminated
- have lighted position lights, or
- be in an area marked with obstruction lights
Are anti-collision lights required at night?
Yes, unless the pilot deems them a safety hazard
What are Runway End Identifier Lights (REIL)?
They identify the approach end of a runway.
What color are Runway Center-line Lights?
First part of the runway: white
Last 3,000-1,000 ft: white/red
Last 1,000 ft: red
