Night Flight Operations Flashcards
You are currently en route to your destination and the sun has set. When can you begin logging flight time as “night” flight time?
“Night” is defined as the time between the end of evening civil twilight and the beginning of morning civil twilight.
Position lights are required to be on during what period of time?
No person may operate an aircraft during the period from sunset to sunrise unless the aircraft has lighted position lights.
Are aircraft anticollision lights required to be on during night flight operations?
Yes; however, if the pilot-in-command determines that because of operating conditions it would be in the interest of safety, the anticollision lights can be turned off.
What color are runway edge lights?
Runway edge lights are white. On instrument runways, however, yellow replaces white on the last 2,000 feet or half the runway length, whichever is less, to form a caution zone for landings.
What color are the lights marking the ends of the runway?
The lights marking the ends of the runway emit red light toward the runway to indicate the end of the runway to a departing aircraft, and green light outward from the runway end to indicate the threshold to landing aircraft.
Describe runway end identifier lights (REIL).
REILs are installed at many airfields to provide rapid and positive identification of the approach end of a particular runway. The system consists of a pair of synchronized flashing lights located laterally on each side of the runway threshold. REIL may be either omnidirectional or unidirectional facing the approach area. 10. What color are taxiway edge lights? (AIM 2-1-10) Taxiway edge lights emit blue light and are used to outline the edges of taxiways during periods of darkness or restricted visibility conditions.
What color are taxiway centerline lights?
Taxiway centerline lights are steady-burning, green light.
