Nida's Principles Flashcards
- Principle of root morpheme
Every word must have atleast one morpheme that carries the core meaning.
Unhappiness - happy
Principle of contrastive distribution
If two morphemes have different meanings they must be considered seperate morphemes.
Run (v) vs runs (3rd s)
Identical meaning and sound form
Morpheme should have a consistent meaning and sound form in different words.
-re in regain, rewrite, redo (again)
Complementary distribution
When two related forms appear in different environments and do not contrast in meaning they may be considered as allomorph of the morpheme
- t , ed, d of past participle
Semantic regularity
The meaning of the morpheme should be predictable when it appears in different contexts
-er in teacher, writer, runner indicates a person who does an action.
Distributional analysis
Morpheme distribution (where it occurs in words) helps to identifying its function and relation to other morphemes.
-ed in walked, jumped, played always marks past tense
