Nicole Renard Flashcards
“S c t m.”
“Stay close to me.”
This could either be a symbol of her affection for Francis or a sign that she’s scared of Larry.
“W d y d s?”
“Why didn’t you do something?”
In the aftermath of the assault, Nicole becomes angry and resentful. She feels betrayed by Francis and uses simple words again to destroy him.
“H f r m o t s o S T.”
“Her face reminded me of the statue of St Thérèse.”
This is Francis’s first description of Nicole. St Thérèse is the patron saint of:
- Missionaries
- France
- Russia
- Florists
- Orphans - FRANCIS IS AN ORPHAN!
“T w b n.”
“That would be nice.”
When Nicole agrees to go to the cinema with Francis, she transforms him. She offers him the attention he never got growing up. The simplicity here shows how easy it is for one person to make a difference.
“L a l f e.”
“Love and loyalty forever.”
When Francis first sees Nicole he pledges this to her.
“D f o, f.”
“Don’t fall off, Francis.”
Nicole’s first interaction with Francis.
“M c.”
“My champion.”
This is what Nicole calls Francis after he wins the table tennis tournament.
“L a s a c a t.”
“Like a small animal caught and trapped.”
This is how Francis describes Nicole after Larry assaults her. This clearly shows how vulnerable she is.
“J g a” ; “a g o d.”
“Just go away” ; “a gesture of dismissal.”
This is how Nicole treats Francis after the assault. The feeling from before is gone.
“B n t b a n.”
“But not to become a nun.”
Nicole has gone to the convent but her reasons are unclear why she chose a convent. Perhaps it is because she was taught by nuns or maybe it’s a more peaceful place. Because she isn’t becoming a nun there it is implied that she intends to reintegrate at some point.
