What was the Russo- Japanese war over?
Russia wanted port Arthur, a warm water port which would allow for all year long trading links

Port Arthur fell due to Japan.

- Trans-siberian railway was a single track.

What was bloody sunday?
- Began as peaceful protest from steel workers angered over poor working conditions in St Petersburg
- Thousands marched to the Winter palace to plead to Nicholas, led by Father Gapon, but he wasn’t there and soldiers fired on the protesters.

The 1905 revolution.

What did Nicholas produce as a result of the 1905 revolution?
October manifesto which promised a duma elected by the people and civil rights such as freedom of speech.
How did soldiers suffer during ww1?
- Mainly peasant conscripts.
- Soldiers didnt have suitable clothing.
- Only 2 rifles for every 3 soldiers.
What were the political impacts of world war one?
- Deputies from the 4th duma formed the progressive bloc which demanded a constituent assembly.
- Nicholas disbanded the duma as a result.
- Nicholas became commander-in-chief which made it easy to blame him for any failures.
What were the economic impacts of world war one?
- Cost of war rose by 13,000 million roubles in 4 years.
- Women and children took on some of the men’s roles. This caused production to slump.
- Lack of good railways prevented food reaching people in towns.
- Rifle production doubled in 1916.
