councillors + representatives from voluntary sector
Scrutinise CCGs and NHS trusts
must be consulted on any local health service changes
Why are meetings of commissioners, providers and regulators good sources of news?
They’re all open to the public!
CQC
care quality commission
regulates NHS and private providers
inspects and monitors hospitals, care homes, GPs, dentists and local authority adult social care
It can fine, issue public warnings or close down an establishment
annually inspects local NHS hospital trusts
NICE
National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE)
provides national guidance on promoting good health
Provides guidance on use of new and existing medicines, treatments and procedures
drugs must be approved by NICE before NHS use
guidance on treatment/care of people with rare/specific conditions
Councils and health
Since 2013 county and unitary have more of a role in public health I.e.
environmental health dpts-investigates i.e. measles/food poisoning
combatting covid 19
sexual health services
reducing drug/alcohol misuse
informing public about healthy eating/exercise
Public health england (PHE)
Agency working for dept. for health and social care
Aim to make public healthier/ reduce health inequalities
Prepare for + respond to public health emergencies i.e. outbreaks/CV-19
Immunisation + screening programmes
