NGO Things Flashcards
Oxfam - Aims
The aim of Oxfam is to create a world where poverty doesn’t exist. They wish for all societies to exist where individuals have an influence on the decisions that affect their lives as well as the freedom to enjoy their rights and responsibilities.
Oxfam - Role
Reduce poverty, seek to assist people in disaster and conflict zones and improve access to health and education services.
Oxfam - Power
Through donations from governments and the public, Oxfam is able to help communities in need by funding projects that build infrastructure and educate the communities. They obtain this power through the support of federal and state governments with donations but also from the communities in allowing them to work in their area.
Oxfam - Ebola case study 2014
Oxfam supported 1.4 million people affected by the outbreak in 2014. They helped build health centres that had access to water and supplied medical equipment. During the outbreak they also built hundreds of hand-washing stations in the communities. They did this by working with the government of Senegal, Gambia and Mali. Through government support they were able to distribute hygiene kits to local communities.
Oxfam - Close The Gap
In 2010, Oxfam alongside with the Australian Federal Government started a program to tackle poverty in Indigenous Australian communities. Oxfam aims to increase the health services in these communities but due to a lack of adequate cooperation from the Australian Government this has not been achieved. Indigenous Australians have been subject to worse health levels than non-Indigenous Australians and often have a higher incidence of illness than older Australians. Australian governments are only spending 38% more on Indigenous health compared to non-Indigenous health despite Indigenous Australians having 2.3 times greater needs than non-Indigenous. This shows that without adequate support from governments via funding, Oxfam’s ability to achieve their aims is restricted.
