Q

NFPA 80 (2022)

Describe hollow metal door frames with side lights and transom lights, and their fire protection ratings.

Bonus: Where is this found in NFPA 80?

A

Hollow metal side light and transom light door frames are made of at least 16 gauge steel that have a door (or paired doors) and one or more window openings. The window portions might extend to the floor or partially from the top of the frame. Transom lights are windows above the door opening. The maximum fire protection rating is 3/4-hour (45 minutes). Typically, fire protection-rated glass and glazing materials are held in place by steel channels called “glazing beads.”

NFPA 80 (2016): 3.3.52, A.3.3.52, 3.3.130, A.3.3.130, 3.3.132, A.3.3.132, 6.3.3.3, A.6.3.3.3, and G.10.3.
