NFL Flashcards
What is the problem:
- The problem is the domestic abuse lawsuit filed again its one key player Greg Hardy.
- Should Richards suspend Hardy or re-sign
-DV climate was high due to video that surfaced of Ray Rice hitting his fiancé
Stakeholders:
*Panthers management (they want to win a Super Bowl!)
*Panthers players (same goal as management)
*Fans (identify with the team; concerned with reputation)
*Sponsors (concern about appealing to fans)
*NFL management (boost licensing & broadcasting revenues)
*NOTE: >50% of team profitability is driven by league success
Richards options:
*Do nothing – riskiest; lose control of situation; may lose sponsors (>$7 million/year)
-Retain Hardy – same outcome as #1; goes against Richardson’s criteria for a good decision
Superficial change – no culture change; same outcomes as #1 & #2
*Drop Hardy – maintain owner reputation; save Hardy’s salary; harder to win Super Bowl
-Renew team culture – minimize recurrence; improve team chemistry and processes
-He won’t resign because he will be a free agent and if hes found not guilty he won’t feel like the organization had his back
You could suspend Hardy for the rest of the season with pay, with no pay, or a portion of pay
You can suspend for a couple of games
What are the considerations
*Loss of sponsors
*Loss of fans
*Preserving profitability
*Protecting the Panthers brand
*Richardson’s reputation
Likelihood of reoccurrence
What should Richardson do?
*Establish a sense of urgency (why change? Public response!)
*Form a group to address the issue (e.g., captains, coach, Richardson)
- form a guiding coalition: hiring people with the same views and removing barriers. Need the NFL to be a spokesperson for the vision against domestic violence.
*Develop a vision for the change (e.g., take a stance against domestic violence)
*Remove obstacles (e.g., other toxic players)
*Strengthen individual and team character
*Ensure changes are rooted in the culture (e.g., onboarding, communications, disciplinary treatment)
