These laws describe the relationship between a body and the forces acting upon it. They also explain how these forces affect the motion of a body as a consequence.
Newtons first law of motion is called
inertia
Newtons first law of motion
often referred to as the law of inertia. This law states
“An object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force”
- Objects will not move from their state of being unless fires acting on them become imbalanced
- The higher the mass of the body, the greater the inertia and therefore more force is required to overcome this inertia

acceleration
Newtons second law of motion
A force applied to an object will produce acceleration in the direction of the force. The acceleration is directly proportional to the size of the force and inversely proportional to the object’s mass.
The formula is:
Force = mass x acceleration
F = ma
F = force (N)
M = mass (kg)
A = acceleration (m/s2)
Since force is the product of mass and acceleration, to produce maximal force, mass and acceleration should be maximised. Think of a baseball bat.
- The higher the mass and the more it is accelerated, the higher the overall force that can be transferred to the baseball.
Examples: sprinting or a tennis serve
