Newtons Notions Vocabulary Flashcards
Any of the basic mechanical devices for applying a force such as an inclined plane wedge or lever
Simple machines
A rigid bar resting on a pivot used to help move a heavy or firmly fixed load with one end when pressure is applied to the other
Lever
A piece of wood metal or some other material having one thick edge that is driven between two objects of parts of an object to secure or separate them
Wedge
A short slender sharp pointed metal pin with a raised helical thread running around it and a slotted head used to join things together by being rotated so that it pierces wood or other material and is held tightly in place
Screw
A sloping ramp up which heavy loads can be raised by ropes or chains
Inclined plane
A wheel with a grooved rim around which a cord passes it acts to change the direction or a force applied to the cord and is chiefly used to raise heavy weights
Pulley
A simple lifting machine consisting of a rope that unwinds from a wheel onto a cylindrical drum or shaft joined to the wheel to provide mechanical advantage
Wheel and axle
The point on which a lever rests or is supported and in which it pivots
Fulcrum
States that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a strait line unless acted upon by an external force
Newtons 1st law
States that the acceleration of an objects is dependent upon two variables the net force acting upon the object and the mass of the object
Newtons 2nd law
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Newtons 3rd law
Two forces acting in opposite directions on an object and equal in size anytime there is a balanced force on an object object stay still or continues moving continues to move at the same speed and in the same direction
Balanced forces
If two individual forces are equal in magnitude and opposite direction in the forces are said to be balanced and object is said to be acted upon by an unbalanced force only when there is an individual force that is knocking down spy a force of equal magnitude and in the opposite direction
Unbalanced force
Definition of inertial force A force opposite indirection to an accelerating force acting on the body and equal to the product of the Excelerator in force and the mass of the body
Inertia
The resistance that one surface or object encounters with moving over another
Friction
