Third Law of Motion

A

“Each action has an EQUAL and OPPOSITEreaction.”
“Every force has an equal and opposite force acting on another object.”
Newton’s third law: If an object A exerts a force on object B, then object B must exert a force of equal magnitude and opposite direction back on object A.

Q

Worked example of Newtons 3 laws of motion

A

Imagine pushing a box on an ice rink:

  1. Before you push the box it will stay still(Law 1).
  2. The more massive the box is, the harder you will need to push the box(Law 2.)
  3. When you push the box, you will feel it pushing back against your hand with a force equal and opposite to the force you apply to the box(Law 3).
  4. If you stop pushing, the box will continue to move at the same speed and in the same direction until another force acts upon it(Law 1).
