NEWTONS LAWS OF MOTION Flashcards
1
Q
First Law of Motion
A
“Bodies will continue to move with a uniform velocity (which includes being stationary) unless acted on by a resultant force.”
2
Q
Second Law of Motion
A
“Resultant force is equal to the rate of change of momentum.”
3
Q
Third Law of Motion
A
“Each action has an EQUAL and OPPOSITEreaction.”
“Every force has an equal and opposite force acting on another object.”
Newton’s third law: If an object A exerts a force on object B, then object B must exert a force of equal magnitude and opposite direction back on object A.

Q
Worked example of Newtons 3 laws of motion
A
Imagine pushing a box on an ice rink:
- Before you push the box it will stay still(Law 1).
- The more massive the box is, the harder you will need to push the box(Law 2.)
- When you push the box, you will feel it pushing back against your hand with a force equal and opposite to the force you apply to the box(Law 3).
- If you stop pushing, the box will continue to move at the same speed and in the same direction until another force acts upon it(Law 1).
