Newtons Laws Flashcards
What is inertia?
When objects keep on doing what they’re doing and resist changes in their state of motion
What is Newton’s first law?
An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with constant velocity, unless acted upon with an unbalanced force
What is a force?
A push or pull on an object
What is a newton?
The force required to give a 1kg mass an acceleration of 1 m/s
Gravity force?
Fg = mg
What is friction?
A force acting in the opposite direction to movement
What is net force?
The overall effect of all the forces acting on a body, it is another way of saying the forces are unbalanced
When adding forces, make sure to use + and - values
Newton’s second law?
a = Fnet/m
Fnet = m.a
Acceleration is proportional to force and acceleration is inversely proportional to mass
(Mass must be in kg and acceleration must be m/s/s)
Newton’s third law?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
What is free fall?
A type of motion in which the only force acting upon an object is gravity. The rate of acceleration is the same regardless of mass
What is terminal velocity?
When an object falls, it’s speed increases. The increase in speed leads to an increase in the amount of air resistance. Eventually the force of air resistance becomes large enough to balance the gravity force. The object stops accelerating as it reaches terminal velocity.
