Newtons laws Flashcards
What is Newtons first law
Law of inertia - ‘A body continues in a state of rest or uniform velocity unless acted upon by an external force
Newton’s second law
Law of acceleration - ‘A Body’s rate of change in momentum is proportional to the size of the force applied and acts in the same direction as the force applied
Newtons third law
Law of Action and Reaction - ‘ For every action force applied to a body there is an equal and opposite reaction force.
What is velocity`
“…the rate of change in displacement (speed but with a directional
element).”
Displacement (the shortest straight-line route between the start and finish points)
Velocity = displacement (m) / time taken (s)
Units – metres per second (m/s)
What is momentum
“…the quantity of motion possessed by a moving body”
Momentum = mass (kg) x velocity (m/s)
Measured in kilogram metres per second (kgm/s)
What is acceleration
“…the rate of change in velocity.”
Acceleration = (final velocity – initial velocity) / time taken
Units m/s/s or metres per second squared
