Newtons Laws Flashcards
Force
A push or pull exerted on a object in order to change the motion of the object.
Motion
A change in position over time
Net Force
The combination of all the forces acting on an object
Speed
Distance traveled per rate of time
Speed = distance/time
Volocity
The speed and direction of an object
Acceleration
The rate at which velocity changes over time
Newton’s first law
An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Newton’s second law
force = mass x acceleration
Newton’s third law
Whenever one object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite on the first.
Inertia
a property of matter by which it remains at rest or in uniform motion in the same straight line unless acted upon by some external force
Friction
A force that resists motion
Mass
The amount of matter in an object
Gravity
An attractive force that exists between all objects that have mass
