Newton's laws of motion vocabulary Flashcards
force
a push or pull exerted on an object in order to change the motion of object
motion
a change in position over time
Net force
The combination of all forces acting on a object
Speed
Distance traveled per rate of time speed =distance/time
velocity
the speed and direction of an object
acceleration
the rate at which velocity changes over time
newton’s first law
an object at rest will remain rest and an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an outside force
Newton’s second law
Force=mass x acceleration
Newton’s third law
for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction
inertia
the tendency of an object to resist being moved or if the object is moving to resist a change in speed or direction until an outside force acts on the object
inertia
the tendency of an object to resist being moved or if the object is moving to resist a change in speed or direction until an outside force acts on the object
friction
a force that resists motion
mass
the amount of matter in a object
gravity
an attractive force that exists between all objects that have mass.
