Newton's Laws Of Motion Flashcards
an object will continue to be at rest or move at a constant velocity unless acted upon by a net external force.
1st Law of Motion / Law of Inertia
natural tendency of an object to remain at rest or in motion at a constant speed along a straight line.
Inertia
the change of motions is proportional to the applied force and takes place in the direction of the straight line along which that force acts
2nd Law of Motion
HARD CARD
what is the formula for the 2nd Law of Motion? What does it mean?
F = ma.
Magnitude of acceleration is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net external force.
to every action, there is always an equal and contrary reaction; mutual actions of any two bodies are always equal and oppositely directed along the same straight line.
3rd Law of Motion
these pairs state “always in opposite direcrions; equal in magnitude but act on different objects.”
action-reaction pairs
(NOTE: stated in the 3rd Law of Motion)
● nor accelerating; maintain constant velocity and are not subject to acceleration.
● both are inertial.
Inertial Frame of Reference
HARD CARD
an object can have ____ net force and still be in motion at a constant velocity.
an object can have zero (0) net force and still be in motion at a constant velocity.
● change in velocity
● caused by a net external force.
Acceleration
● the vector sum of all individual forces acting on an object.
● determines the object’s motion.
Net force / Resultant force
interaction between objects.
Force
HARD CARD
For an object to remain ____, net force acting on it must be ____.
For an object to remain equilibrium, net force acting on it must be zero (0).
