Newton's Laws of Motion Flashcards
Force
A push or pull exerted on an object in order to change the motion of the object.
Motion
A change in position over time.
Net Force
The combination of all the forces acting on an object.
Speed
Distance travelled per rate of time. (Speed = Distance/Time).
Velocity
The speed and direction of an object.
Acceleration
The rate at which velocity changes over time.
Newton’s First Law
An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
Newton’s Second Law
Force = Mass x Acceleration.
Newton’s Third Law
For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction.
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist being moved or, if the object is moving, to resist a change in speed or direction into an outside force acts on the object.
Friction
A force that resists motion.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object.
Gravity
An attractive force that exists between all objects that have mass.
