Newton's Laws And Momentum Flashcards
A quantity defined as the product of the mass and velocity of an object.
Momentum
An object’s change in position relative to a reference point.
Motion
The rate at which velocity changes over time. An object does this when it changes speed, direction, or both change.
Acceleration
The speed of an object in a particular direction.
Velocity
The tendency of an object to resist being moved or if the object is moving, to resist a change in speed or direction until an outside force acts on the object.
Inertia
A force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses and that decreases as distance between the objects increases.
Gravity
An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at a constant speed and in a straight line unless acted in by an unbalanced force.
Newton’s First Law
The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the amount of force applied,
Newton’s Second Law
Whenever one object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite force on the first.
Newton’s Third Law
An action exerted on a body in order to change the body’s state if roast or motion.
Force
An object that is not moving is said to be at what?
Rest
What makes it difficult to observe Newton’s first law on the motion of everyday objects?
Friction
Newton’s first law of motion is sometimes called what?
Law of inertia
An object with …… mass has less inertia than an object with …… mass
Less, more
It is easier to change the motion of what kind of object?
An object with less mass
The acceleration of an object increases as its mass …… and vice versa.
Decreases
An object’s acceleration increases as the force exerted on it …… and vice versa.
Increases
The acceleration of an object is always in the same what?
Same direction as the force exerted on it
All forces act in what?
Pairs (action/reaction pairs)
If a force is exerted, another force is what?
Equal in force and opposite in direction
What does momentum depend on?
Mass and velocity
The more momentum an object has, then what?
The harder it is to stop the object or change its direction
What is the formula for momentum and what does each letter stand for?
p= m x v (p is momentum, m is mass, v is velocity)
What states that anytime that objects collide, the total amount of momentum stays the same?
The law of conservation of momentum
When the mass of 2 objects stick together after colliding, the combined objects move in the direction of the object that has what?
The greater momentum before the collision
When the mass of two different objects collide after combining, the objects have ……that differs from the …..of either object before the collision?
Velocity
In collisions where objects bounce off, the momentum is usually what?
Transferred from what object to another’s which causes the objects to move at different speeds in different directions (total amount of momentum stays the same)
