Newton's Laws Flashcards
Define Force
A push or pull on an object
Define Acceleration
the rate of change of velocity
Define Inertia
the ability of an object to resist change in motion
Define Velocity
the speed of an object
What does Newton’s First Law state?
All objects in motion stay in motion and all objects that are at rest stay in rest.
What does Newton’s Second Law state?
Force equalls Mass times Acceleration. F = M x A
What does Newton’s Third Law state?
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
How are Velocity and Acceleration related to each other?
velocity is the mesure of the displacement of an object (its speed), and acceleration is the rate of change of velocity
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
forces are always paired
3
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
an object at rest always stays at rest
1
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
the law of inertia
1
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
the greater the force, the greater the acceleration
2
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
the law of lazy
1
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
3
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
force equals mass times acceleration
2
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
bigger, heavier things don’t move as fast as small, lighter things
1
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
As the fish pushes water behind her, she is propelled forward
3
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
if the alien throws the baseball in outer space, it would travel in the same direction and at the same speed
1
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
to fly together, the larger pterodactyl will need to apply more force because she has a larger mass than the baby pterodactyl
2
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
the force needed by the brakes to slow down a moving racecar must be greater as the mass of the car increases. This is why racecars are made of lightweight materials.
2
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
the kid jumps forward off the skateboard and the skateboard flies backwards
3
Match each phrase with the correct Newton’s Law
as the girl pushes the wheelbarrow foward, she feels a pressure of the handles pushing back on her hands
3
what is a collision
when 2 or more objects hit each other
During a collision, what can change in the objects involved
their shape and size
what causes changes in motion and shape of colliding objects
small imperfections in the atomic structure
what is transferred during a collsion
energy
is it possible that when an object pushes on another in a collision, it may not appear to change shape when it is actually doing so, but just at a scale that is too hard for us to see?
yes
what happens to solid objects in a collision or when other contact forces are applied to them
they bend and sometimes break
if a moving object collides with a motionless object, why does the motionless object begin to move
because energy is transferred
