Newton’s Laws Flashcards
Balanced forces ………….
Cancel each other out or have no resultant force
Unbalanced forces …………..
Cause a resultant force to act on the body

What is Newton’s first law?
A body in motion will remain in motion and a body at rest will stay at rest unless it is acted on by an external resultant force
What is weight?
Weight(N) is the force of gravity acting on a body
What is mass?
Mass(g) is the volume of material in a body
What is the gravitational field strength(N/kg) of earth?
10N/kg
Weight(N) =
Mass(g) * Gravitational field strength(N/kg)
What is Newton’s Second Law?
If a non-zero resultant force acts on a body, it’s acceleration will change directly proportional to its mass
What does Newton’s second law help calculate
Acceleration
Resultant force(N) =
Mass(g) * acceleration(m/s)
What is Newton’s third law?
If body a exerts a force on body b, then body b exerts an equal and opposite force on body a
What forces act on a skydiver?
Air resistance upwards, weight downward
Do the two forces acting on a skydiver stay the same
Weight remains the same, but air resistance increases
