Newton's Laws Flashcards
What is inertia?
Inertia is a resistance to a change in motion. The inertia of an object depends on it’s mass - the more mass, the more inertia. A greater resultant force will be needed to change the motion of an object with high inertia
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
A body will remain at rest or continue to move at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an external force.
What causes an object to move?
An imbalance of forces
What is Newton’s second law of motion?
When a force is exerted on an object, the acceleration of the object increases if the resultant force on it increases, and decreases if the mass of the object increases.
resultant force = mass x acceleration
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter that an object has and is measured in kg, whereas weight is how large the force of gravity is on an object and is measured in N
How do you calculate weight?
mass x gravitational field strength
What does a 1kg object on Earth weigh?
10 N
What is Newton’s third law?
When two bodies interact, they exert equal forces on each other but in different directions.
What is terminal speed?
When two forces exerted on an object are the same, the object stops accelerating and moves at a constant speed, which is called terminal speed
