Newton's Laws Flashcards
define Inertia
Inertia is the tendency to resist any change in motion
give an example of Inertia
when you are on a fast train and it breaks suddenly, your body will lurch forwards. This is because the breaks are acting on the train and not your whole body. Your feet will slow down but your body will not.
define newton’s first law
A body will remain at rest or continue to move at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an external (resultant) force.
define newton’s second law
The acceleration of an object is proportional to the resultant force
and inversely proportional to the mass of the object
(greater the mass of an object, the more force it will take to accelerate the object.)
relationship between acceleration and resultant force
acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the resultant force acting on that body.
relationship between acceleration and mass
acceleration of an object is inversely proportional to the mass of that body.
what is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass (kg) is a measure of how much matter there is in an object, while weight is a measure of the size of the pull of gravity on the object
terminal velocity is when….
the object moves at a steady speed in a constant direction because the resultant force acting on it is zero.
why does why a falling object reach a terminal speed?
The force of gravity acts on an object, causing it to accelerate towards the earth. As its velocity increases the drag force (friction) exerted on it by the air increases. When the two forces on the object balances, it reaches a constant velocity.
Newtons 3rd law
In an interaction between A and B, the force exerted by A on B is equal and opposite to the force exerted by B on A.
what is a force
a push or pull acting on an object due to interaction with another object
define resultant force
the sum of all individual forces acting on an object
how do you calculate resultant force?
add together the vector arrows of all individual forces
define inertia
Inertia is a resistance to a change in motion
