Newton's Laws Flashcards
What does Newton’s first law state?
An object tends to stay at rest and an object at motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an external force.
What is inertia?
The tendency of an object to remain at rest or in motion.
What is weight?
Is the force of gravity acting on an object.
What is an external force?
A force acting on an object outside the system as opposed to the ones within the system.
What is the formula for weight?
Weight = Mass x Gravitational Field Stregnth (9.8 m/s^2)
What does newton’s second law state?
The force acting on a body is proportional to the product of its acceleration by its inertial mass.
F = ma
What does Newton’s third law state?
If object A exerts a force on object B then object B exerts a force on object A equal in magnitude but opposite in direction. These forces act on each other simultaneously.
What is the normal force?
The perpendicular contact force exerted on an object on a surface.
What is a friction force?
The parallel contact force acting on an object on a surface.
fr = μN
Friction Force = coefficient of friction x Normal Force
What is the difference between static and kinetic friction?
Static friction is the frictional force acting on a body that is resting, while kinetic friction is acting on an object that is in relative motion.
