Newton's First Law Flashcards
What is a force
A force is a push or a pull that occurs when 2 objects interact and forces can cause objects with mass to accelerate.
What is the difference between contact and non-contact forces?
Contact forces are forces that only exist between objects that are touching, whereas non-contact forces are forces that act over a distance.
Give 3 examples of a contact and a non-contact force.
Contact forces include applied forces, friction, and normal force whereas non-contact forces include gravity, magnetism and electric force.
How does an object behave if more than one force acts on it?
If more than one force acts on an object, than the object acts as if only one force acts on it.
What is the net force of an object?
The net force is the vector sum of all the forces acting on an object.
Difference in an object’s behaviour when the net force equals 0 and net force not equal to 0.
When the net force acting on an object is 0, the object isn’t accelerating. The object may be moving or stationary, but if it is moving, then it is moving at a constant velocity and is not accelerating, When the net force is not equal to zero, than acceleration will occur.
What does newton’s 1st law state?
Newton’s 1st law states that an object will not change its state of motion, unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.
Define inertia.
Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist changed to its motion
Explain the relationship between an object’s mass, inertia and force.
The larger mass an object has, the more inertia is has. The more inertia an object has, the more force is required to accelerate it.
