What is a Tabloid?
A newspaper with a smaller format, often emphasising sensationalism and entertainment.
Define Quality/Broadsheet.
A newspaper with a larger format, typically focusing on in-depth news and analysis.
What is a Masthead?
The name of the newspaper and its logo, usually displayed prominently at the top of the front page.
What is a Column in a newspaper?
A vertical section of a newspaper page, often used to present articles by a specific writer or on a particular topic.
What are Column Inches?
A measure of space in a newspaper, calculated by multiplying the column width by the number of columns an article occupies.
What is a Byline?
The name of the journalist who wrote an article.
Define Headline.
The title of a news story.
What is a Banner Headline?
A large headline that spans the width of the newspaper page.
What is a Subheading?
A smaller headline that provides additional information about the story.
What is the Lead/Lead Paragraph?
The opening paragraph of a news story, summarising the main points.
What are the Five Ws in journalism?
Who, What, Where, When, Why (and sometimes How).
What is a Caption/Cutline?
Text accompanying an image, providing information and context.
What is a Cover Story?
The main feature article on the front page of a magazine.
Define Feature in journalism.
An in-depth article on a particular topic, often with a focus on human interest or storytelling.
What is an Editorial?
An article expressing the newspaper’s opinion on a particular issue.
What is a Review?
An article evaluating a book, film, play, or other cultural product.
What is a Serif font?
A font style with small decorative lines at the ends of letters. Examples: Times New Roman, Garamond.
Define Sans Serif font.
A font style without decorative lines. Examples: Arial, Helvetica.
What does Justified Type mean?
Text that is aligned evenly along both the left and right margins.
What is Hard News?
Timely and factual reporting on important events, such as politics, crime, and disasters.
What is Soft News?
News that focuses on human interest stories, entertainment, and lifestyle topics.
Define Plagiarism.
Presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own.
What is Libel?
Publishing false or defamatory statements about someone that damage their reputation.
What is Misinformation?
False or inaccurate information that is spread unintentionally.
