- isolation due to different cultural practices/ different first languages
- loss of a sense of community
- disconnect from social networks
- low self esteem and status
- Community and workplace discrimination
- Hate crime

What are economic barriers faced by newcomers?
A
- difficult to find a job because home credentials are not recognized within Canada
- most often must take on low-income positions that keep individuals/families living in poverty
- not sure what they are qualified for
- dont have canadian style resume

What familial barriers are there for newcomers?
A
- disconnect from family in home country
- increased stress can cause tensions within the family unit
- kids learning language faster, adapting quicker
- gender inequity

What are SOWK strategies to addressing these barriers?
A
- anti-racism, appropriate approach
- Education and community work that prevents hate crime that complement the work of hate crime laws.
- creating outreach, advocacy and consultation groups that improve education. Creating brochures, having presentations in schools and working with institutions and government.
- strength based approach- here’s someone who has lost who they are as a person, so really helping them get back in touch with what their strengths and resources are, cultural context specific
- help them feel less like they are hiding
- move towards empowerment
