A
  • difficult to find a job because home credentials are not recognized within Canada
  • most often must take on low-income positions that keep individuals/families living in poverty
  • not sure what they are qualified for
  • dont have canadian style resume

A
  • disconnect from family in home country
  • increased stress can cause tensions within the family unit
  • kids learning language faster, adapting quicker
  • gender inequity

What are SOWK strategies to addressing these barriers?

A
  • anti-racism, appropriate approach
  • Education and community work that prevents hate crime that complement the work of hate crime laws.
  • creating outreach, advocacy and consultation groups that improve education. Creating brochures, having presentations in schools and working with institutions and government.
  • strength based approach- here’s someone who has lost who they are as a person, so really helping them get back in touch with what their strengths and resources are, cultural context specific
  • help them feel less like they are hiding
  • move towards empowerment
