Newcastle Flashcards
Name one strategy used to manage the coast (gr)
Concrete groaned built in the 1980’s
Name the impact the groynes had ?
Trapped sand which was moving North-East
Lasted 20 years, then decayed and were useless
Can reduce amount of sand carried further along the coast which could lead to the beach being eroded further north towards Dundrum bay.
Were the groynes sustainable
Yes as they resulted in protecting the beach and kept tourist enjoyment
No because they do not last very long and have to be replaced. Which is expensive ( 1,000 per metre for 20 years)
Name another strategy used
Gabions, new wire mesh boxes filled with stones placed near the mouth of the River Shimna in 2006
Impact of Gabions
Protect recreation ground
Stabilised an area of the coast to allow pedestrians to use the footbridge
However earlier Gabions decayed over time and to be replaced
Gabions sustainable ?
Yes maintain tourist attraction
Are able to break up and absorb energy from waves better than any wall.
No need to replaced after time, expensive.t
Not environmentally friendly
Name on hard engineering strategy
Sea wall
Originally built in 1800s, new one was built in 2002
Impacts of the Sea Wall
Original wall protected building for years
The new wall is curved so wave energy is directed back out to sea
Reflected waves are ending up eroding the beach on their way back
Sustainable sea wall?
Yes original wall protected building for years
No - not invincible can be eroded away eg old wall 2002 and a new one is very experience around 4 million
No the beach is being eroded away, meaning fewer tourist will enjoy Newcastle if the beach is poor and the town will lose money
Overall sustainability of the efforts
Coastal management all have an element of unsustainability, however methods like beach nourishment should be tried.
