Three phases of maternal role attainment
Dependent (taking-in), dependent-independent (taking-hold), interdependent (letting-go)
How long does the dependent (taking-in) phase last and what are some characteristics?
First 24 to 48 hours. Excited, talkative, rely on others for assistance.
How long does the dependent-independent (taking-hold) phase last and what are some characteristics?
Begins on day 2 to 3, lasts 10 days to several weeks. Focus on baby care, competency, wants to learn and practice, deals with physical/emotional discomforts
How long does the independent (letting-go) phase last and what are some characteristics?
After the taking-hold phase. Focus on family as a unit. Resumption of role (intimate partner, individual)
