- vitamin K necessary in coagulation
- protects against vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) d/t GI, nasal, skin, or circumcision site bleeding during first week of life

indication
CDC: all newborns should receive hepB vax w/in 12h of birth
- if parturient is HBsAg +, neonate receives hepB vax + hepB immune globulin
- if status unknown, give vax and test parturient –> give HBIG w/in 1st week of life if positive
