Well-baby Checkup
- scheduled within the first few weeks and then every 3 months
- check the growth and development of the baby
Body proportion
- look out of proportion compared to adults
- head is very large 1/4 total length
- chest is rounded
- legs are very short,draw up and bowed
- almost no neck
Face
Broad ,flat nose,tiny chin
Cranium
Fontanels(soft spots)where skull is not closed;allows brain to grow
- closes between one and two years
- head may appeared egg shaped from egg shaped from birth .
Eyes
Appear huge
Eye color develops within 6 months
No tears until 3 months
Relfexes
Automatic responses;some needed for survival
Physical needs and advantages
Nutritional needs are very important because a new born is growing very quickly
Breast feeding,a preferred method
12 months recommended
-baby isn’t over fed
-saves time & money
-reduces allergies ,ear infections & possibly sids and diabetes
-can’t have cows milk till a year
Premature Babies
- placed in intensive care
- stayed neonatal intensive care units in heated and enclosed beds.
Clothing & dressing
- clothes need to be confortable,easy to put on
- appropriate for the weather
