Head and neck test?
Neck is checked for swellings/cysts
If born with tooth it’s removed
Chest and heart test?
Heart and lungs checked with stethoscope
Normal for did heartbeat after birth
Arms and hand test?
Arms checked for pulse, strength and movement
Look for two main creases in hands
Abdomen test?
Pressing gently for size and shape of liver
Hips, legs and feet test?
Barlow test for clicky hip
Legs checked for size and length
Nerves and muscles test?
Check not floppy or too stiff
What is PKU?
PKU is a rare disorder that’s prevents baby’s from metabolising a chemical
What is the the thyroid function test?
Thyroid gland is producing (thyroxin)

152cm x 50cm

What is the average head circumference of a newborn baby?

What does APGAR stand for?
Appearance Pulse Grimace Action Respiration
What does APGAR show?
See if a baby needs special care or not
What is the swallowing and sucking reflex?
Finger is placed in the mouth babies will automatically suck
What is the rooting reflex?
Finger is stroked across the face babies will turn their heads in search of a nipple
What is a grasp reflex?
Automatically curl their fingers around an object if it’s placed in the palm of their hand
What is stepping reflex?
Babies to ‘step up’ if shins are placed on a firm surface
What is placing reflex?
Held in a standing position make stepping movements
What is a Moro reflex?
Sudden movements that make the baby feel like they’re gonna be dropped
What is startle reflex?
Loud noises/bright lights startle baby
What is vernix?
Hair all over the body
What is lanugo?
White substance when baby’s born
What is milia?
Milk spots
What is an incubator?
Filters and humidifies the air. Constant temperature and replicates the womb
What is a ventilator?
Helps baby breath
What is phototherapy?
Light therapy lights above incubator to help get rid of jaundice
What are IV lines?
Needles connected to tubes that pass fluids/drugs into baby’s system
What is a nasogastric tube?
Tube that goes through nose into stomach to give baby food
What is a monitor?
Checks breathing and heartbeat
