What are the four (4) components of the Quad screen?
AFP, HCG, Inhibin A, Estriol
What is part of maternal-fetal-newborn medicine?
Mother: Pre-pregnancy conditions, pregnancy healthy, pregnancy complications
Fetus: teratogens, assessment of wellbeing
Newborn: newborn period
What is the neonatal period?
Birth to 28 days of life
How do you calculate infant mortality rate?
of deaths/ 1000 live births
What are common maternal health issues?
Antiphospholipid syndrome Lupus Diabetes Thyroid Idiopathic thrombocytopenia
What is a commonality between maternal health issues that can cause problems with the fetus?
They all change the blood flow
What are components of maternal-fetal health?
Teratogens Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs Infection Placental problems Amniotic fluid
What are common maternal-fetal infections?
Group B Strep
UTI
Congenital (TORCH)
What are common placental problems?
Previa: placenta exposed over cervix
Accreta: placenta in muscle so it had DEC blood flow
Abruption: tears away from endometrium
What are common problems with the amniotic fluid?
Oligohydramnios
Polyhydramnios
PROM: premature rupture of membranes
How do we assess the intrauterine fetus?
Growth: IUGR, macrosomia (diabetes)
Quad screen
Fetal monitoring
What is the most important part of the Quad screen?
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)
Screens for anomalies
If it’s DEC, think trisomies
If it’s INC, think neural tube defects
