Q

What is evaluation criteria ?

A

Evaluation criteria comes from the specifications (constraints and considerations) and is done before the Production as a commitment, guideline and tool.

Is done by using constraints and considerations to create questions in the past tense. Then how it is important followed up by how you can test or plan to test.

Q

What is ergonomics?

A

Ergonomics is study of the relationship between people and their living and working environment.
Ergonomic principles are used in design to to analyse and improve comfort and ease of use, to minimise strain and fatigue and for safety reasons.
The study of ergonomics can be defined in terms of: - —Body size
- Body movement
- Body conditons

Q

What are specifications?

A

Specifications refers to the constraints and considerations.
Constraints meaning: Must haves, no choice, to meet brief
considerations meaning: Things you can consider but they aren’t a must have eg:
-environment
- Sustainability
-Human centered design

Q

What are 6 factors that would show a product to be of high quality ?

A

1: Good quality timber/materials or glue has been used
2: Hand made with clean joins with a nice tight fit
3: Pass the strength and durability test
4: The processes used in the production eg: Domino joins, provide strength and stability
5: Surface is sanded and smooth
6: The finish is clean, no excess glue, drips/runs, evenly applied.

Q

Brief description of Bauhaus

A

Bauhaus was an art design school in germany during time between the two world wars. Designers explored industrial processes to make objects cheaper and easier to produce in large quantities and reduce bulk whilst retaining functional strength
Design features- Emphasis on function of objects
- Use of industrial methods and materials, increased use of metal
-designed for mass production
-design for the synthesis of architecture and product design: the totality of the building and it’s contents
Designers: Wassily Kandinsky (artisit)
- Marcel breuer
- Walter gropius

Q

Brief description of modernism

A

Mainly American “modernist designers”
Appllied organic design approaches which were later exaggerated into Biomorphism an moved to Pop Design of 60s and beyond.
Design features: Use of modern materials and processes (expanding use of plastic and veneer)
- Clean organic geometric forms (shapes that mimic curvature of body)
- Strong often vibrant colours
Designers: Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi

Q

De Stijl brief description

A

A dutch movement 1917-31, founded by artist Theo van Doesburg.
DEsign features: - Searching for simplicity and harmony in abstraction, reducing to purest form
- Use of straight lines and rectangular shapes (later included diagonal lines).
- Limited range of colours (red, yellow, blue, black, and white)
- No surface decoration
Designers: Gerrit Rietveld

Q

What are ways to evaluate finished products

A

Testing- To stimulate the conditions of use
Measuring - To check with the specifications
Trying for size- To see if it fits where it is meant to fit
Totalling up costs- to ensure the accuracy of budgt predictions
Client discussions- To obtain their opinions of end result
Trials by an end user- To see how it works

17
Q

What is pre production?

A

It is and includes everything before production

  • Planning
  • Design brief
  • Evaluation criteria etc
18
Q

What is post production?

A

Post production is and includes everything after production

  • Testing of a product/ use of the product
  • Evaluation of product
19
Q

What are marketable features and 3 examples of them?

A

Marketable features are positive aspects of the product

eg: Multiple uses
- Hand made
- Good value for money

20
Q

What is manufactured board?

A

manufactured board is made of timber chips and created into lengths/ sheets of timber

  • made by man
  • cheaper than natural timber
  • lighter
  • more convenient
  • easier
  • doesn’t move
  • Ply, mdf, chip board etc
21
Q

When might manufactured board be more beneficial than natural timber??

A

In situations that require lighter wood and tighter budget as it’s cheaper.

22
Q

What are 3 construction techniques?

A
  • Mitre joint: a joint made between two pieces of wood or other material at an angle of 90°, such that the line of junction bisects this angle.
  • Domino joint: Uses a domino join cutter (festool domino jointer) to cut spaces in the timber to then fit domino dowels inside.
  • Biscuit joint:A biscuit joiner uses a small circular saw blade to cut a crescent-shaped hole (called the mouth) into the pieces of wood, which are then joined together using a “biscuit”.
23
Q

what are the 11 steps of the product design process?

A

1: Identify client, user, need, problem or opportunity
2: Design brief - outline of context Constraints and considerations
3: Design option criteria and product evaluation criteria
4: research
5: visualisations
6: DEsign options (presentation drawings), selection and justification of preffered option
7: Working drawwings and pattern drafting
8: Production plan
9: Production
10: Product evaluation
11: Production planning and process evaluation
