New Testament Bible Stories Flashcards
Zacchaeus
Luke
Chapter 19: 1-10
Tax collectors in the first century Palestine were not paid; they simply collected as much money as they could so that they could have a sum left over for them selfs. This is what Zacchaeus was doing in Jericho.
Jesus invited himself to Zacchaeus’ house before Zacchaeus change his ways. The crowd would have been shocked, because to eat at a man’s house was to accept that man and everyone knew he was not accepted in society. The word ‘sinner’ here means outcast. Zacchaeus was a changed man in this result.
It was not being disliked that made him change his ways, it was be favoured by Jesus that made him change his ways.
The paralysed man
Mark
Chapter 2: 1-12
In the first century some illnesses were considered to be a punishment by God for sinning.
Jesus cures the paralysed man because of the faith of the four friends.
Jesus accused the lawyers of blasphemy and the punishment for this could have been the death death penalty. They thought only God can for give people’s sins.
Jesus’ actions marked the begging of a conflict between himself and the religious authorities.
By forgiving the mans sins, Jesus showed he cared for people’s spiritual health as well as his physical well-being.
The people are amazed because the lawyers cannot think of a reply to Jesus’ words. Jesus had proved, by telling the man to walk, that he did have the authority to forgive sins. If, as most people believed, God had sent the paralysis as a punishment, God must have forgiven him if he could walk now.
The calming of the storm
Mark
Chapter 4: 35-41
When the evening came Jesus said to his disciples, ‘let us go to the other side’.
Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along just as he was, in the boat.
There were other boats with them.
Suddenly a storm began and waves broke over the boat until it was nearly swamped.
Jesus was in the back sleeping on a cushion.
The disciples woke him and said, ‘teacher,, don’t you care if we drown?’
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘quiet be still’. Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
He said to his disciples, ‘do you still have no faith?’
They were terrified and asked each other, ‘who is this man? Even the wind and wave obey him!’.
The rich young man
Mark
Chapter 10: 17-31
A young rich man went to Jesus and ask him’ how do you receive eternal life’
‘You know the commandments;do not commit murder;do not commit adultery;do not steal; do not accuse anyone falsely;respect your parents;and love your neighbour as your self. Said Jesus
‘Ever since I was young I have obeyed these rules’ replied the young man.
Jesus looked straight at him with love and said ‘you need only one thing;go and sell all you have and give all your money to the poor’
The young man was sad because he was very rich.
Jesus said to his disciples’ I can assure you it is harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God then it is for a camel to enter through the eye of a needle.
The woman and Simon the Pharisee
Luke
Chapter 7: 36-50
Jesus was having dinner with Simon the pharisee.
This lady rushed crying and cried on Jesus’ feet and washed the feet with sweet perfume and dryer the feet with her hair.
This woman was a sinner an outcast and she was so sorry she washed Jesus feet and she was forgiven.
The Good Samaritan
Luke
Chapter 10: 25-37
There was this man and he was traveling on the road to Jerusalem to Jericho it was a dangerous road because there were robbers.
The man got robbed and was left there half dead.
A while later a priest walked past and just ignored him.
After a Levite walks past and ignores him as well.
After that a Samaritan walks past and took pity on him and help him and put wine and oils on his cuts, and puts him on his donkey and takes him to the nearest inn and says ‘do what ever you need to do to this man and I will come back and pay the bill’.
This shows, what you think people are is not always true.
The lost son
Luke
Chapter 15: 11-32
A man had two sons.
The ‘‘younger’’ son asked if he could have his inheritance now.
After the younger son sold all he had and set of to distant land and spent all he had o reckless living.
When famine struck the only thing he could do was sit and which the pigs.
He realised that his father’s servant were in better condition than him.
So he decided to go home.
When his father saw him he said ‘put a ring on his finger, kill the fatted calf and prepare a feast.
The elder son was angry because he had worked for his faster all these years and he did not get a lamb to share with his friends and his brother had wasted half of his fathers earning on reckless living.
The Sower
Luke
Chapter 8: 4-8,11-15
There was a sower and he threw some seeds
Some seed landed on the path and then the crows ate them, this symbolises the people who ignore God message.
Some seed landed in the stone and they stared to grow a little but then died, this symbolises the people who listen to god but then give up.
Some seed landed on the weeds and put gods message into practice but money detracts them and they choke and die.
Some seed landed in rich soil and puts gods message in practise and they grow into a beautiful flower.
