Is Christ Divided?

In 1 Corinthians 1:11-17 Paul responds to the concerns sent fro the house of Chloe. What are the contentions and what does Paul say about his mission?

Is Christ Divided?

  • There are contentions among saints about the different followings of different christian ministers.
  • Paul rejoices that he baptized none…. except Crispus, Gaius, and household of Stephanas.
  • God is not dividing. All are one in Christ.
  • “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.”

11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;

15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

Knowledge come from the Spirit

In 1 Corinthians 2:11-14, Paul talks tell of the knowledge of God. Why is it hard for somebody to gain knowledge without the Spirit?

  • We have recieved the Spirit of God, by which we know the “things that are freely given to us of God”
  • The natrual man rejects the things of the spirit. “they are foolishness to him”
  • Important things are “spiritually discerned”

11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Milk, Meat, and Gardening

In 1 Corinthians 3:1-7, the saints are divide in their ministers. How does Paul chastize and council them?

  • The Gentile converts were babes in Christ and couldn’t take the “meat”
  • Their sin was their division because of the ministers which led them to believe. This is evidence of their “carnality”
  • One plants, another waters, and God gives the increase. We are all united under God who makes us to grow, regarless of our “minister”

1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?

6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

The Sufferings of the Apostles

In 1 Corinthians 4:8-13, Paul sarcastically speaks to the Corinthians. Why? What are some of the “comparisons” he makes?

  • Paul might be being sarcastic.
  • Paul is pointing out the difference in how the Corinthians see themselves and how a true disciple of the Lord should live.
  • In this way, he may be humbling the Corinthians, and exhorting them to help the saints that are in need.
  • “We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised”
  • Even through all the turmoil, the Apostles endure patiently and minister to others.

8 (Talking of difference between Gentiles and Apostle) Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.

9 For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.

10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised (people’s views of them).

11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;

12 And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it (endure patiently):

13 Being defamed, we entreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.

Judgement and Sueing

In these verses, 1 Corinthians 6:1-7, Paul counsels the Corinthians against suing eachother. How does he thus reason?

  • Why would you sue your brother, when ye are trianed in the good judgemenet of the spirit?
  • At the last days we shal “juges angels?”
  • Set people to judge matters withing the church.
  • Why don’t you just take wrong or suffer instead of fighting before the unbelievers?

1 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?

2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?

3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

4 If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.

5 (sarcastic) I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?

6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers.

7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?

Divorce

In 1 Corinthians 7:10-11, Paul speaks of Marriage and Divorce. What counsel does he give?

  • The Lord commands that husband and wife shall remain together.
  • If the wife leaves, she should not remarry..or should go back to her husband.
  • The husband should not seek a divorce.

10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:

11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

Offending in Meat

In 1 Corinthians 8:9-13, Paul was concered with Gentile Christians who ate meat with Jewish Christians. Why would this be a concern, and why should the Gentiles stop doing so?

  • Gentile Christians would be eating meat offered to idols, and the Jewish Christians wanted to refrain
  • “Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.”
  • Choose to use your liberty to refrain from asserting your liberty.
  • When you wound the weak concience of others, ye sin against them and Christ.

9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak (those who feel they are still under the law).

10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;

11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? (Something is sin if it’s against your conscience, it can be somewhat different for all men)

12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.

13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

In 1 Corinthians 9:1-12, Paul asserts his rights as an Apostle. Why?

  • One of my freedoms as a christian is the right to not assert my freedoms. Why not? for the good of the kingdom.
  • As an Apostle, Paul has many right and freedoms. Especially that of being able to ask for money from the saints.
  • Yet, they did not use it so that they would not offend and so that the Gospel would not be hindered.
  • Sometimes it’s better to forgo rights–more peace, and not offfending.

1 Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?

2 If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.

3 Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,

4 Have we not power to eat and to drink?

5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? (shouldn’t our wives be supported by our ministry as well?)

6 Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?

7 Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? (If I do work, shouldn’t I get paid?)

8 Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?

9 For it is written in the law of Moses, “Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn.” Doth God take care for oxen?

10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

12 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

In 1 Corinthians 10:16-21, Paul speaks of communion with Christ. How are we more united as we partake of the sacrement?

  • As we partake the Sacrement, we become one with Christ. Also, we become one as Christians. CommUnion.
  • As we become one with others who partake, we can become less selfish and feel a sense of duty towards others.
  • Becareful who you bow before. It is not possible to serve both God and the devil.

16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.

  • Paul recounts the last supper and the sacrement. It is a symbol to show the Lord’s death till he comes again.
  • Don’t partake of the sacrament unworthily, but in the right spirit toward God and Man.
  • Reflect inwardly, examine yourself, as you take the sacrement. Do you serve God? Mosiah 2:17

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. (don’t partake in an unworthy manner, but in the right spirit)

28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

  • One of the central meanings of the sacrament is to help us realize our duty to bless and feed the poor. As we all need the communion of Christ to make it to heaven, others need our help to make it in this life.

In 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, Paul compares members of the church to body parts. What point does he make about church membership?

  • Paul compares a body to the Church of Christ.
  • Each member or part of a body as a function, without which that body cannot function properly.
  • Same in the church, we have need of all kinds of people and no one person is more important than another.
  • If one member suffers, all suffer. If one is honored, all rejoice.
  • All members should have the same care one toward another.

12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

19 And if they were all one member, where were the body?

20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.

21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the ahead to the feet, I have no need of you.

22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:

23 And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

24 For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:

25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

In 1 Corinthians 13:9-13, Paul speaks of the 2nd Coming, childishness, and charity. How does he tied these things together?

  • Paul tells that at the 2nd coming, that that which is in part shall be done away. And we shall have a full knowledge.
  • Paul is telling the Corinthians they are acting as chilren by unduly emphasizing spiritual gifts.
  • But that they only see in part, but that one day they shall know fully as God understands. They’ll see the whole picture.
  • But until that day, abide in Faith, Hope, and Charity.

9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: (Paul is telling the Corinthians they are acting as children by unduly emphasizing spiritual gifts) but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly (for now we only understand in part); but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. (but one day we shall know all as God know us fully)

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

  • Greater is he that prophsies than he that speaks with tounges (unless he interprets).

3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
